Well, it is the tail end of the persimmon drying season. A friend had some drying under the eaves of his house. Since this year my trees had about 5 fruit, he gave me a shopping bag full. Some were apple hard, others were just bags of pulp.

five fruitsというと、five kinds of fruitということになるのでしょう。

food
日本語は「食品」「食べ物」「食糧」「食料品」などということばをあまり厳密に使い分けていません。使い分けがあるとすれば、「何か食糧ある」と言った場合は、漢字の熟語が文語的で堅い表現となります。口語では、「何か食べ物ある。」「なにか食べる物ある。」と言えばそれですみます。
　「食品」とか「食料品」となると、単なる食べ物ではなく、食べ物の種類を意味します。英語でa foodとかfoodsと可算名詞として使うと、食品とか食料品の意味になります。
　でも、日本語では食べ物と食品の意味は重なり合っているところがあり、ふたつの違いをあまり意識しません。
　次のふたつの文を較べて見ましょう。
Is cheese food? （チーズは食べ物か。）
Is cheese a food?　（チーズは食品か。）
どちらの文も、次のように不可算名詞として言いかえることができます。
Is cheese a kind/type of food?

What is your favorite food?
も
What are your favorite foods?
も同じ意味として使えます。
I like food like rice and potatoes.
I like foods like vegetables and meat.
meatも数えようと思えば数えられますが、fishと同じようにだんだん複数形は使われなくなる傾向にあるように感じています。fruit/fruitsやfish/fishesは未だに使い分けられています。

finger foodは、単数形で不可算として使われます。
There are some finger food on the table.

これも、種類を言う時には数えます。
Vegetable sticks are a finger food. (=a kind of finger food.)
Cut the carrot in small cubes and skewer them on a toothpick with small pieces of cheese. It can serve as a good finger food.

foodsの使われ方=食品

natural foods自然食品
frozen foods冷凍食品
canned foods缶詰食品
serve traditional foods伝統的な食べ物を(食卓に)出す。

salmon/trout/carp

魚は集団で泳ぐものは羊とおなじように単数と複数が同型になります。
I caught three salmon.
There are a lot of carp in this pond.
Do trout have the same life cycle as salmon?

単体の場合は、aをつけます。
I caught a salmon.
There’s only one carp in this pond.
I saw a big trout in the river.
種類を表すときは、複数形が可能です。
There are several kinds of trouts.(この場合several kinds of troutも可能。どちらも複数形として理解する。さもないとtroutは鱒の肉にさまざまな種類がある、という意味になる。)
They are two different kinds of salmons. The colors of their meat are different.
