現代では海賊はソマリア海域にいるようですが、昔のように山道で旅人を襲う昔気質の山賊は存在しなくて、車で待ち伏せのような追いはぎ(knight of the road/highwayman)だと私は思うのですが（？）。でも、山賊みたいなのがいる国もあることでしょう。テロリストが山に住み着くようになればbrigandsと呼ばれるかもしれません。brigandやbanditは「山賊みたいだ」というような人の悪口を言うようなときに使える言葉です。

brigandはbrigade（旅団＝だいたい５０００人規模の軍隊戦闘員組織）と同源。(古イタリア語brigare=to fight)
イタリア語でbrigante:「兵隊崩れの無法者」= an irregular or partisan soldierという感じ。

旅人は山で山賊に襲われたものです。

昔の山賊はどのような格好や顔つきをしていたかは想像するしかありませんが、「山賊の娘ローニャ」(1981年、Astrid Lindgren)という児童向けの本もあって、２０１４年にはアニメ化され、NHKで放映されていますから、言葉とヨーロッパの山賊のイメージは知られていることでしょう。英訳はRonia, the Robber's Daughter で、robberが使われています。

「アリババと４０人の盗賊」は、Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

アメリカ西部開拓時代の列車強盗もbrigandsと呼ばれていたようです。

現代では、「こっそり泥棒」thief、「強盗」robber、「押し入り強盗」burglarとかが使われます。「くすねる」はpilferer（人）、pilfer（動詞）pilferage/pilfering（行為）です。mug/hold-upは人気のない通りなどで武器を手に襲う。押し込み強盗は(armed) burglary（行為）とか(armed) robbery（行為）ですが、burglarやrobber（人） は空き巣の時ばかりに押し込むのではありません。寝込みを襲うburglaryもあります。昼間だって武器を持って押し込むこともあります。 空き巣狙いは、留守中の人のいない家(when a house is empty/an empty house/while one is away/in one’s absence) を襲う泥棒です。 Did the group rob/burgle（動詞）/break into that house while the family was away? thiefがbutcher knifeやcarving knifeなどの武器を持っていることもあります。an armed thiefで、こうなるとこそ泥ではなくて恐ろしい強盗(theft+extortion=armed thief/(armed) robber)に変身します。 日本では、人が寝ている時、あるいは留守だと思った時に泥棒が入りますが、家人に気づかれるといなおって(turn aggressive/intimidating/threatening, showing a weapon)、金品を要求する（for/demanding money and valuables） 場合があります。 いなおり強盗は、When the people of the house woke up and noticed there was an intruder, the thief turned a robber and threatened/intimidated them for money with a knife. It was a thief-turned-armed robber case. 部屋数が少ないと家人はすぐ気づきますので、いなおられて却ってあぶない。 銀行強盗はa bank robbery/rob a bankです。 本の中で、crimeの項でも触れましたが、robbery, burglary, theft, muggingは抽象的にとらえる場合は不可算、個々 の事例は可算です。, There were two robberies/thefts/burglaries/muggings in this district.
