それ以前は、

などのように、不可算名詞でした。

energiesはまだ複数名詞としての扱いで、an energyのような単数扱いにはひとによっては抵抗があるようです。代わりに、an energy sourceのように、sourceが使われます。

Solar energy is a clean energy source.

energiesは、energy sourcesが簡略化された形ですから、枠には入らないさまざまな個々のエネルギーを思い浮かべます。mailsがmail messagesを省略した形と同じ現象です。いずれ、sourceが省略されて、an energyという形が容認されるでしょう。
しかし、clothesも複数名詞ですが、これを単数としてa clothとかone of the clothesとは言えません。a lot of clothes/a set of clothes, a pile of clothes, some clothesなどとおおざっぱにしか言えずいつも複数です。Clothesはa piece of, two pieces of, one item of, two items of などと数えません。ひとつひとつ分けて数えることができません。Clothingはan item of, two items ofというふうに数えます。


energiesが容認されてきますと、可算名詞の原則にも従うわけですから、different types of energyだけでなく、different types of energiesも併用されてきます。

混乱が起きますが仕方がありません。最終的には、抽象的なエネルギーという場合には不可算で、いろいろなエネルギーという場合には、可算名詞（人によっては単数のない複数名詞）として扱われることになります。

　努力、精力という意味でenergiesが使われます。これは単数のenergyでも構いません。Energiesを使うと心理的な努力も入ると説明されている場合がありますが、複数家は心理的、時間的、体力などさまざまな形態の努力を意味するのです。
