What is ESDRC?
The ESDRC (Education for Sustainable Development Research Center) was founded based at Rikkyo University in March 2007, with the aim of helping to consolidate ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) in our society. It was chosen as part of the "Open Research Center" Project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2007, concerning "Developing Research and Educational Programs on ESD". Its research has attracted public interest from home and abroad.
What do we do?
Research on ESD is interdisciplinary in nature, studying various issues in the environment, economy, and society. However, because these issues have been addressed independently in different disciplines, we have yet to see the comprehensive reorientation of education, the development of education systems, capacity-building for educators and trainers, and networking of researchers and practitioners, towards sustainable development. The ESDRC approaches these issues from the perspectives of environmental education and development education based on humanities and social studies, and aims at becoming the hub of an ESD research network in the Asia-Pacific region.
How are ESDRC research projects are determined?
Besides workshops each project teams, ESDRC holds joint meeting with all the researchers twice a year to report progress and examine future research possibility. The steering committee with the heads of each project team provides an overall research guideline for projects, selects researchers, determines the annual schedule, and supervises all the on-going projects. We hold symposiums, lectures, and workshops with public based on the direction provided by the steering committee and the joint meetings.
What is ESD?
ESD can be rephrased as the reorientation of education for achieving sustainable development. ESD is education to foster the ability and perspective to actualize a secure future through sustainable development. Education in this sense means not only formal but also non-formal education/ informal learning, which can be conducted anywhere in the society.
