Freshmen's Course Registration Guidance: Translation Project

In this project, we created English versions of instructions on course registration for international students entering Rikkyo University in the 2024 academic year. The linguists post-edited translations that were generated by support tools such as ChatGPT and DeepL. The project was a new initiative to introduce advanced technology into the translation process, such as utilizing AI-generated audio. While the team was impressed by the quality and convenience of ChatGPT’s translations, some issues were found in the AI output. Through this project, we once again recognized that strong language skills and research skills are required for future linguists in order to carefully assess options generated by ChatGPT. We also gained valuable insight into how to utilize advanced technology effectively.

Interpreting Support at Kodomo Shokudo

We served as interpreters at Kodomo Shokudo, community dining event for children held at Nana-Terrace (ななてらす) in Toshima City. The event aimed to promote interaction between international students from the College of Intercultural Communication and local residents.
Two international students gave presentations and held Q&A sessions on the cultures of their home countries, the United States and Slovenia. We provided consecutive interpreting for these sessions. Before the event, we had meetings with the event's organizer and the international students. We also prepared a vocabulary list related to food and culture based on the materials provided by the organizer in advance. The event attracted participants of various ages, and although some unexpected questions arose, we were able to interpret smoothly throughout the event. After the event, we received feedback and advice on our performance and discussed the most appropriate expressions.

English Translation Project for the RiCoLaS Official Website “Projects” Page

We translated the “Projects” pages on the RiCoLaS official website for the 2016–2022 academic years into English. We aimed to create translations that would be accessible to a wide range of English-speaking readers, including non-native speakers of English, in order to introduce RiCoLaS to a broader audience.
We aimed to create translations that would be accessible to a wide range of English-speaking readers, including non-native speakers of English, in order to introduce RiCoLaS to a broader audience. The project team then worked on the translations through weekly meetings, and spent significant time in reviewing and refining the English expressions.
The team included students from the second to fourth year. Although smooth online communication among members was sometimes challenging, the project was successfully completed and delivered.。
