Liaison Interpreting for Short-Term International Students for the Second Time in the 2016 Academic Year

Duration: January - February 2017
Client: Center for Japanese Language Education (CJLE)
Project: Liaison interpreting for international students on a field trip
Location: Asakusa etc.

How we prepared

We used simple interpreting devices for the first time and tested how to use them during the training. Furthermore, we practiced interpreting while walking using a mock script of the field trip and received practical advice from our instructors.

On the day of interpreting

We had to adapt flexibly to the situation and try to figure out on the spot what is expected of interpreters. Thanks to the training, we were able to actively respond to issues that could arise.

Reflection session

During a reflection session, the project managers, interpreters and trainees shared their feedback and exchanged opinions from their respective points of view. Through this reflection, we reaffirmed that RiCoLaS provides a valuable opportunity to experience things that we cannot experience in the classroom.

Our First Interpreting Project

Duration: June - July 2016
Client: Center for Japanese Language Education (CJLE)
Project: Liaison interpreting for international students on a field trip

RiCoLaS was in charge of interpreting for 12 short-term international students on their campus tour and field trip.

How we prepared

First, we had a meeting with the teaching staff who was in charge of the campus tour and field trip to discuss the route for the campus tour and what would be explained. We conducted a training session based on what had been discussed at the meeting.
We were nervous during the training, but we identified areas for improvement and prepared for the day of interpreting.

On the day of interpreting

Several unexpected things happened, but it provided us an opportunity to learn how to handle unforeseen situations. We were a little more nervous on the day of interpreting but we managed to pull it off confidently as time went on.

Reflection session

Based on survey feedback from the international students and clients, the student interpreters reflected on their performance and discussed areas for improvement for future interpreting tasks.
