International Symposium "Experiential Learning In Translator And Interpreter Education"

Duration: January 13th - 14th, 2018
Location: Rikkyo University, Ikebukuro Campus, Tachikawa Memorial Hall 3rd Floor

An international symposium was held on the topics of the "Status Quo of Translation and Interpreting Education in the World" and "Opportunities and Issues in Experiential Learning in Training Programs for Translators and Interpreters".

The symposium was hosted by the Rikkyo College of Intercultural Communication and partially co-hosted by the Kanto Branch of the Japan Association for Interpreting and Translation Studies.
The symposium was attended by many people from a wide range of fields, including university faculty members, students and those from the interpreting and translation industry.

In addition to the presentations by professors from universities in countries and regions such as the United States, Korea, Spain, Ireland and Taiwan, there were also presentations on Rikkyo University's efforts. Among them, the activities of RiCoLaS were also introduced.
RiCoLaS students provided simultaneous interpreting as part of their practical training and assisted in running the event.

Liaison Interpreting for Short-Term International Students for the Second Time in Academic Year 2017

Duration: January - February 2018

Project: Interpreting during a field trip for international students
Location: Niiza Campus, Nihonbashi etc.

We provided interpreting for the Wadaiko Project workshop and the field trip from Nihonbashi to Akihabara.
We were given opportunities to deliver the Wadaiko Project overview, different types of taiko, or more specifically, wadaiko (Japanese drums), and greetings with actual demonstrations, exploring this field of art for the first time as interpreters.
Following the previous field trip to Ochanomizu, we were able to once again deepen our understanding of the history of Tokyo.

Information Session for the Translator and Interpreter Training Program

The RiCoLaS team members organized an information session attended by nearly 40 high school students.
The information session included a wide range of hands-on activities, which the high school students enjoyed.

In addition, the RiCoLaS team members actively discussed and planned various activities to generate interest from the students. These activities included a lunch session with undergraduate students and alumni sharing their stories.

The high school students' smiles served as the most valuable feedback for the team members.

Interpreting Project for International Students

Duration: June - July 2017
Client: Center for Japanese Language Education (CJLE), Rikkyo University
Project: Liaison interpreting for international students on a field trip

How we prepared

Once again, the training was conducted on campus using simple interpreting equipment. The project manager created scripts that reflected the anticipated content of the field trip and we practiced interpreting while walking. After the training, we shared our impressions and ideas on areas for improvement. We continued training individually afterwards and expanded our vocabulary using reference materials in order to be fully prepared for the task on the day of the field trip.


On the day of the field trip

We responded flexibly to schedule changes and unforeseen situations involving the international students. Additionally, the experience helped us learn the ideal way to provide support to our fellow student interpreters during interpreting, which we don't often have a chance to do in regular class settings.

Our First Interpreting Project Outside Rikkyo

Duration: July 2017
Client: Kanto Branch of the Japan Association for Interpreting and Translation Studies
Project: Interpreting for a guest speaker presentation

How we prepared

Although the guest speaker provided us with sufficient reference materials in advance, the content was challenging due to the historical background and Chinese proper nouns. We identified areas for improvement through the training and developed tactics to overcome them. This included determining the appropriate timing for switching between the two interpreters.

On the day of the guest speaker presentation

 We initially planned to provide interpreting services only for people who actually needed interpreting. However, teachers specialized in interpreting also attended the event as audience members and provided valuable feedback, conveying their high hopes for our futures.

Translation Project on Event Materials

Duration: May - June 2017
Project: English to Japanese translation of handouts for a movie event (research paper overview and speaker's introduction)

At the beginning of the new academic year, we launched this project with our new members.
The project included the translation of handouts from English to Japanese for an event organized by the College of Intercultural Communication.
It was a very challenging subject, but we worked on it with passion.
The translation project was undertaken by students with different levels of experience, from undergraduate students who were participating in a translation project for the first time to research students who had already gained experience as an intern. In the final stage, doctoral students reviewed the draft translation.
On the day of the event, we distributed the handouts to nearly 90 event attendees.
