Crisis Translation: Japanese localization of video learning materials

November 2022 - February 2023

Japanese subtitle project for INTERACT video course materials

We worked on Japanese subtitles for the video course materials "Translation 101" by INTERACT (International Network on Crisis Translation). "Translation 101" is a series of tutorial videos on the basics of translation aimed at "citizen translators" who assist in times of disaster.
The INTERACT Project was launched abroad following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Given the lack of similar initiatives in Japan, our team sought and obtained official approval from INTERACT to undertake the Japanese localization.
Throughout the entire translation process, team members not only worked on tasks individually, but also actively engaged in discussions with each other. We created a schedule table, glossary and query sheet to share information. We also conducted peer reviews. This close interaction among team members greatly contributed to enhancing the quality of the translation.

Interpreting of Lectures and Field Trips for Short-Term International Students

January 2023

Lectures at: Ikebukuro Campus (Rikkyo University)
Field trips to: NHK Museum of Broadcasting, Shakujii Park

We had the privilege to provide interpreting for a short-term international student program, which was conducted for the first time in about three years. Five of us, including undergraduate and graduate students, shared the responsibility of interpreting for lectures on Japanese culture in the classroom and field trips aimed at deepening the participants' understanding of the lecture content.
The themes of this year's project were "The Development and Culture of Broadcasting in Japan" and "The Reality and Perception of Bushi and Samurai." Given the complexity of these topics, we particularly recognized the importance of thorough preparation and practice in advance. While there were aspects of our interpreting performance that we would like to improve upon, this interpreting experience was a valuable and enriching opportunity for all the team members.

Interpreting: Hiromi Hashimoto, Toko Tsutsui, Rena Nemoto, Manami Kubo and Chenren Li

Interviews of International Students Studying Translation and Interpreting: Independent Video Production and Subtitling

May - November 2022

Filming of International Student Interviews (in English and Korean)
Japanese Subtitles

We filmed interviews in English and Korean with students studying in the field of translation and interpreting at graduate school, and created Japanese subtitles. This project was initiated with the intention of sharing the experiences of actual students studying in this field with Japanese speakers interested in this discipline. We carefully managed the timing and readability of the subtitles and on-screen text to produce the finished subtitled version.
