We are pleased to announce, the College of Sociology, Rikkyo University eventually found own Sociological Association. It is 60th anniversary of the establishment of the College, and one of the major events is this Conference.
Rikkyo Sociological Association, to found this, is perennial question. This foundation benefited from the support of a variety of people. Let me take this opportunity to give due acknowledgement: I really am most grateful for numerous efforts made by the Dean, Professor Yasushi Matsumoto. His efforts have been invaluable. I wish to record my deep thankfulness to the faculty members and also to today’s participants.
Special appreciation is due to paper-presenters from overseas: Professor Eric Fong, from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Badaruddin Mohamed, from University Sains Malaysia. And Professor Lih Yun Lin, from National Taiwan University. I also thank Ms Kaoru Ida for her preparation for the conference. In fact, this establishment is a collaboration of a number of people. Today we could take first step, then we would like to develop the alumni networks further and also to contribute more to the Sociological arena. Thank you.
Over the past few years (2020-2022), we have had unprecedented experiences as public life everywhere has accommodated the corona virus pandemic. It has been a global disaster. In particular, changes in communication styles have emerged, such as the widespread introduction of online meetings. Under these circumstances, conflicts between nations have become prominent in the international community, and on the other hand, there is solidarity within and between nations that oppose the emerging conflicts.
Such internationalization of collaboration and conflict has also been seen in public protests of various kinds.
In various major metropolises, the corona pandemic has brought forward awareness of the serious extent to which people live in poverty, while at the same time, various organizations have been able to gather wide support for their public activities. For example, when we consider urban communities in Japan today, as they have responded to the pandemic, we confront a deeper awareness that support for the poor has been insufficient, even as we can witness through online means how support for vulnerable minorities is being carried out.
In this workshop, we focus upon several cases in the east Asian region and proceed with the reports and subsequent discussions.
We sincerely hope that this workshop will contribute to further sociological research that can assist in forming public policy.
